Deontay Wilder set to fight sub Gerald Washington on Feb. 25
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder is set to fight unbeaten contender Gerald Washington on February 25 at Legacy Arena.
Washington replaces Wilder's original opponent Andrzej Wawrzyk, who tested positive for a banned substance.
Wilder (37-0, 36 knockouts) hasn't fought since suffering a torn right biceps muscle and fracturing his right hand against Chris Arreola last July. Washington (18-0-1, 12 KOs) is a 34-year-old former Southern California tight end and defensive end who also served in the Navy.
Washington knocked out former title challenger Ray Austin in the fourth round of his last fight on the undercard of Wilder-Arreola. The Arreola matchup came after Wilder's scheduled opponent, Alexander Povetkin, tested positive for a banned substance.
The FOX-televised fight is the main event of Premier Boxing Champions.
