The fight was a close one, with Couture looking to use his wrestling to wear down his younger, faster, bigger opponent. While Couture was able to control the first round and take Vera down as the fight progressed this strategy seemed less and less effective. Vera successfully stopped Couture from taking him down in the later rounds and in the second round knocked Couture down after landing a firm kick to the body, followed by a knee to the head. He also successfully took Couture down in the third round.

Judging by the postmatch comments of Vera and UFC commentator Joe Rogan it seems that this will be another controvesial decision.

In other news from the Manchester Evening News Arena, Dan "The Outlaw" Hardy scored an upset win over Mike "Quick" Swick defeating the American by unamious decision to earn a welterweight championship match with George St-Pierre.

Swick was the aggressor in the first round, repeatedly testing Hardy's grappling skills but the Nottingham native was able to take control of the fight in the latter two rounds and had a number of opportunities to finish the fight. After the fight, both St-Pierre and Hardy were interviewed inside the octagon about what should be the next welterweight championship fight.
