Barnes wins boxing gold at Commonwealth Games

Paddy Barnes of Northern Ireland has scored an impressive 8-4 victory over defending champion Jafed Uutoni of Namibia to clinch the 49-kilogram boxing gold medal in the Commonwealth Games.

Barnes, who is the European champion and Olympic bronze medalist, led from start to finish in the final here Wednesday.

He took a 3-1 at the end of the first round. It was only midway into the second session that he faced any resistance from his opponent, with the lead narrowing down to 5-4.

Uutoni went for attacks in the third, but Barnes offered a stubborn defense and produced some fine counter-attacks to clinch the fight.
