Texas A&M-South Carolina rivalry trophy could honor Alamo hero

Texas A&M has numerous century-old traditions, but a new one will begin when the Aggies kick off the 2014 football season.

South Carolina hosts Texas A&M on Aug. 28 for their first meeting as SEC rivals, and a trophy is already in the works for this new matchup.

According to GoGamecocks.com, Texas Gov. Rick Perry and South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley have collaborated in developing the prize the schools will play for each year. What they decided on was a bronze sculpture of James Bonham, a South Carolina student who would become a Texas hero at the Battle of the Alamo.

"We’re mixing politics, football and history," Dawson said.

The rivalry may not ever become what the Lone Star Showdown was with the Longhorns, but the Aggies’ new battle with the Gamecocks is just the beginning of many new great Texas A&M traditions to come in the SEC.
