Sooners back in playoff picture after beating Texas?
A weekly look at where Oklahoma ranks in the college football landscape and how the Sooners fare against some of the top teams competing for the four playoff spots:
Best win: At West Virginia.
What’s next: vs. Kansas State in Norman.
Trending: Down. OU is 1-1 the past two weeks, but the win against Texas didn’t make anyone feel much better. OU is slipping and a win against a top 20 team is pretty much mandatory at this point.
Chances of making the playoff: Also slipping. The ascension of Mississippi State and Ole Miss certainly don’t help. Georgia, Auburn and Alabama also are SEC teams who are in mix and Michigan State and Oregon are one-loss teams who could find themselves ahead of the Sooners if all have one loss at the end of the season.
In or out if the playoff started today: Out.
Best win: Beat West Virginia in the season opener.
What’s next: vs. Texas A&M Saturday.
Trending: Down. A loss to Ole Miss and an escape at Arkansas has put Alabama in an odd situation â looking like the Tide has seen better days. All could be better with a win over A&M.
Chances of making the playoff over Oklahoma: Even. Alabama has a good loss and Oklahoma has a good loss. Alabama has meaningful games left, so do the Sooners.
In or out if the playoff started today: Out.
Best win: At Kansas State
Trending: Even. Certainly no one is blaming Auburn for losing at Mississippi State. The Tigers are still considered one of the elite in the league, let’s see what happens the rest of the way. Another loss and Auburn would be in a much tougher situation.
Chances of making the playoff over Oklahoma: Really good. The Tigers have a quality road win. OU won’t have that chance this season, after losing at TCU.
In or out if the playoff started today: In. No. 4 seed. The win at Kansas State is the difference.
Florida State (6-0)
Best win: vs. Clemson in overtime.
What’s next: vs. Notre Dame, Saturday
Trending: Even. Nothing to impressed with for Florida State this season. Seems as if the Noles are in the news more for Jameis Winston than anything else.
Chances of making the playoff over Oklahoma: Really good, especially with a win over Notre Dame. Honestly, Florida State’s schedule has become easier as the season has gone on. Only Notre Dame looks better than most thought at the beginning of the season.
In or out if the playoff started today: In. No. 3 seed.
Mississippi State (6-0)
Best win: vs. Auburn
What’s next: At Kentucky Saturday
Trending: Way, way up. Who’s hotter? The Bulldogs have beat No. 8 LSU, No. 6 Texas A&M and No. 2 Auburn in consecutive games.
Chances of making the playoff over Oklahoma: We should not even have to discuss this. Mississippi State has built up and impressive credential list.
In or out if the playoff started today: In. No. 1 seed.
Ole Miss (6-0)
Best win: vs. Alabama
What’s next: vs. Tennessee
Trending: Way up as well. Ole Miss has a pair of wins over ranked SEC teams and also has a win over Boise State.
Chances of making the playoff over Oklahoma: Really good. The Rebels still have games against LSU, Auburn, Arkansas and Mississippi State. If they can get through the rest of the season with one or fewer losses, the Rebels will be in the playoff for sure.
In or out if the playoff started today: In. No. 2 seed.
Others to watch heading into week 7: Oregon (5-1) has the one loss, a bad one, at home to Arizona. However, the Ducks have some punch on the resume´thanks to a win over Michigan State and then at UCLA. Don’t be surprised if Oregon is unbeaten the rest of the way … Notre Dame (6-0) has everything in front of it. A win against FSU this week and the Irish will be in … Baylor (6-0) survived. The Bears are the only team in the Big 12 that controls its own destiny. The Bears still have to play at Oklahoma … Michigan State (5-1) … Another week, another win for the Spartans. They’ll need help though … Georgia (5-1) … Is a sneaky team at this point. The Bulldogs lost early but should be in the SEC title game. It won’t be a favorable matchup for Georgia, but a win and Georgia will be in Final Four … TCU (4-1) has a signature win, but the collapse against Baylor is haunting. TCU has to win against OSU this week at home … Kansas State (4-1) is more notable this season for its loss to Auburn than its wins. That will change if the Cats can win at Oklahoma this Saturday … Ohio State (4-1) isn’t impressive, but it is Ohio State. Always relevant … Oklahoma State (5-1) is worth mentioning because the Cowboys have TCU on the schedule this week and still have games left against Baylor, Kansas State and Oklahoma. There’s a lot of chances for the Cowboys to impress.
Last week’s top-four: 1. FSU, 2. Oregon, 3. Auburn 4. Oklahoma
No longer looking at: Texas A&M, Arizona, Georgia Tech
