Rangers trim roster to 39 players
Right-hander Nick Tepesch, who came into spring training vying for a spot in the Texas rotation, was one of the Texas player optioned to Triple A Round Rock Monday.
The Rangers also sent right-handers Cory Burns and Mikes Mikolas to their Triple A camp as well as infielder Andy Perrino.
Those moves, along with several other made by the club, dropped the number of players in camp to 39.
Texas also reassigned right-hander Daniel Bard, catcher Patrick Cantwell, catcher Brett Nicholas, infielder Kensuke Tanaka, outfielder Bryan Petersen and outfielder Brad Snyder to its minor league camp.
The Rangers also offered reassignment to veteran Jose Contreras, who is weighing his options. He could accept the assignment, reject it and become a free agent or retire.
Tepesch, who started 17 games for the Rangers last season, allowed 10 runs on 19 hits in just eight innings of work this spring. Opponents were hitting .487 against him.
Contreras, 42, who was signed to a minor-league deal, didnât fare much better in Arizona. In his three appearances, he was tagged for seven runs in six innings of work with opponents batting .448.
