Mayfield nearly gave up football

The journey Baker Mayfield took to get to Oklahoma is well-documented.

But it almost didn’t happen, Mayfield said.

"A lot of people know this, but I almost quit sports in high school to play video games, "Mayfield told Sports Illustrated’s "Campus Rush."

Mayfield planned to travel around the country playing in video game tournaments, but his parents weren’t excited about the idea, so he went back to playing football at Lake Travis High near Austin, Texas.

Mayfield has 13 touchdown passes this season, already more than the 12 he threw for Texas Tech two seasons ago as a freshman, but he’s really impressed Oklahoma center Ty Darlington with his gamer skills.

"You hear him talking trash to random 6-year olds. The way he talks about video games – he’s on another level."
