Former Cowboy Irvin to help recruit Clippers’ Jordan to Mavericks

Can former Cowboys-great Michael Irvin help get DeAndre Jordan (above) to the Dallas Mavericks?

The Dallas Mavericks’ likely pursuit of Clippers unrestricted free-agent center DeAndre Jordan could be aided by a Pro Football Hall of Famer. Michael Irvin told 103.3 FM’s "The Afternoon Show with Cowlishaw & Mosley" on Monday that he’s been in touch with Jordan in recent weeks.

"DeAndre Jordan, he sent me his number a few weeks ago," Irvin said. "He’s a big Cowboys fan, a big Mike Irvin fan. I was going to reach out to him and get some tickets to the Finals. I just knew they were going to be there, Michael Irvin sitting right here, DeAndre Jordan’s guest right now, ‘Hey! What’s up?’"

But now Irvin plans to shift into recruiter mode. The timing may be good in light of a FOX Sports report Monday that Clippers point guard Chris Paul and Jordan currently have a strained relationship. Paul is apparently frustrated that Jordan didn’t work harder to improve his horrendous free-throw shooting. The Mavs know about free-throw troubles thanks to Rajon Rondo’s brief stay. The organization has a free-throw coach on staff in Gary Boren.

Irvin was smitten by Jordan’s performance for the Clippers this season. He likes that Jordan seems to do everything with extra "oomph."

"I feel I have a duty to make sure I let him know exactly how beautiful it is to land right here and call Dallas home," Irvin said. "That would be, no doubt, the truth for me. There’s no place better, and I will certainly let him know that."

The Mavs will unleash Chandler Parsons to recruit Jordan once he’s officially a free agent (or perhaps before). But owner Mark Cuban would be wise to pursue this Cowboys angle. Jordan’s a huge fan of the Cowboys.

Let "The Playmaker" work his magic in pursuing one of the best rim protectors in the NBA.
