NARRATOR: Bayer Leverkusen traveled to Bremen in desperate search of 3 points as they chase the final Champions League spot. And it was an emotional afternoon for Werder as they said farewell to captain Zlatko Junuzovic, who's leaving the club in the summer after six years as their influential on-field leader.

Following two defeats on the bounce, Leverkusen are playing catch up in the race for the Champions League, and they made more of the early running. Leon Bailey came close a quarter of an hour in as he looks to end a run of eight games without a goal.

Chances were at a premium in the first half, with a flash of inspiration sorely required. Julian Brandt almost provided it on the half-hour mark. Speed of thoughts and a quick adjustment of the feet brought a bicycle kick that nearly caught Pavlenka out. Bremen are safe from relegation and were happy to wait for their chance on the counter, and they were denied their best opportunity of the first half by the fingertips of Bernd Leno.

Despite the lack of goals by the break, home games are enjoyable for Bremen, unbeaten in their last 11 at the Weserstadion. The onus was on Leverkusen to try and force a breakthrough in the second half, and they were presented with a gilt-edged opportunity in the 50th minute. Under pressure from Kevin Volland, Pavlenka could only push the ball into the path of Kai Havertz. But he blasted over with the goal at his mercy.

Leverkusen threw everything at attack, bringing on Bellarabi and Alario, and they were in the thick of the action for the final chance with five minutes remaining. But the melee that ensued in the area was symptomatic of a luckless afternoon in front of goal. Kevin Volland's effort against the bar wouldn't have counted anyway after a foul on Pavlenka.

Bremen failed to register a shot on goal in the second half, but that was of no concern. This day was all about the departing Zlatko Junuzovic on his last appearance in front of his home fans. It finished goalless in the end, meaning Leverkusen have only picked up 1 point in their last three games-- a missed opportunity in the race for the Champions League.
