- Bayer Leverkusen started the weekend just outside the Champions League places. With tricky fixtures to come, the hosts were expecting a win as Bayer head coach Heiko Herrlich faced Manuel Baum, who used to be his assistant at lower league side Unterhaching.

It was a contrast of styles at the BayArena. Leverkusen's full-throttle counterattacking against Augsburg's more direct, crossing-base game. Here, the visitors sat back and soaked up pressure, although Charles Aránguiz should have done better when this loose ball ran to him in the penalty area.

Leverkusen were looking for a response after a 2-0 loss to Koln before the international break. Dominik Kohr was brought into the side for this one, and he caused his former club and teammate Marwin Hitz one nervy moment.

While Bayer had 10 shots to Augsburg's one in the first half, there were few clear chances. Julian Brandt, back from international duty with Germany, having impressed with a cameo against Brazil mid-week, tried his luck from distance. Herrlich had called on his players to show more heart and desire two weeks on from that loss in Cologne, but the supporters were left wanting at halftime.

Augsburg had more attacking intent after the break, switching to three at the back. Joint top scorer Michael Gregoritsch went for this ambitious chip 60 seconds into the second period. Having failed to score in three of their previous six games, Augsburg didn't get much closer than that at the BayArena.

But there would be one major talking point from the game, coming on 65 minutes, involving Julian Brandt and Leon Bailey. Brandt celebrated, and the home supporters thought it was 1-0, but there was a clear touch from Bailey.

The Jamaican forward was in an offside position when this was hit, and the flick probably wasn't needed. It looked like the ball was going to beat Marwin Hitz, anyway. A hugely frustrating 0-0 draw for Bayer, who are in danger of coming up short in the race for a top-four spot.
