ANNOUNCER: Hertha Berlin against Mainz at the Olympiastadion. The home side inspired by the recent performances of Valentino Lazaro. He opened up his scoring account on the previous matchday. Could he add to Mainz's woes further, as they looked to end a run of three straight defeats?

Despite dominating possession, Hertha didn't offer too much of a threat going forward. At the other end, Rune Jarstein was forced into action inside the first 15 minutes. Emil Berggreen racing on to Bell's pass. It's a very smart save from the goalkeeper.

Starting the weekend in the relegation playoff position, Mainz knew things needed to change. A piece of inspiration was needed from somewhere to turn their desperate form into something more positive. Cue Robin Quaison. Hertha struggling to clear, but Quaison's quick feet and composure to strike through the legs of two Hertha defenders, giving them a lead five minutes before the break-- his third Bundesliga goal of the season. Halftime, and Mainz a goal club-- and fully deserved.

Hertha unbeaten in four Bundesliga matches coming into this one. Terrific at Bayer Leverkusen last time out, but lackluster at home, without creating clear-cut openings. And it was Mainz who would grab the crucial second. Hertha's defensive line was high, space for pacey Quaison to exploit. And 2-0. All this for a side who hadn't won away from home since February 2017.

And this was a real team performance. Compact defensively, rock-solid and always a threat in attack, Geritt Holtmann close to making it 3-0 with 15 minutes remaining. This was an impressive away day performance from Sandro Schwarz's men. Holtmann unable to add to his one Bundesliga goal he's got this campaign.

A win could have taken Hertha within a point of the top six, but they were never in a position to trouble Mainz, who had conceded two or more goals in each of their last 10 Bundesliga outings. A fabulous away win in the capital for Mainz, just what was needed. Hertha 0, Mainz 2.
