Wolfsburg and Besiktas draw 0-0 in Champs League
Ten-man Wolfsburg held on to earn a 0-0 draw with Besiktas in the Champions League on Wednesday.
The German champion had the better chances until Grafite’s ejection in the 74th minute, but Besiktas threatened more with a man up.
The outcome left Manchester United firmly in control of Group B with nine points after the Red Devils notched their third win in three games with a 1-0 victory at CSKA Moscow. Wolfsburg has four points, CSKA has three and Besiktas has one.
While Besiktas could not take advantage of the man advantage, it still earned its first point in the group.
Grafite was sent off for striking the face of Ibrahim Kas as the two jostled in front of Besiktas’ goal before a corner.
Grafite scored a hat trick in Wolfsburg’s 3-1 opening win over CSKA Moscow, but the Brazilian has not found the net for five weeks now and the red card appeared to be the result of his frustration.
While Wolfsburg attacked more and had the better chances, Besiktas looked dangerous on counterattacks and did not settle only for defending its goal.
Dzeko was left unmarked in Besiktas’ area to connect with a cross but headed over the crossbar early in the game.
On the other side, Wolfsburg’s goalkeeper Diego Benaglio smothered a shot from Ibrahim Kas.
Marcel Schaefer then tested Besiktas goalkeeper Rustu Recber, who dropped the ball but it was cleared by his defenders.
Makoto Hasebe crossed for Dzeko, but the striker sent his header wide this time.
Benaglio was forced make a diving save to foil striker Bobo, who then set up Rodrigo Tello, whose shot went wide.
In a fast-moving game, both goalkeepers were kept busy and Rustu stopped efforts by both Dzeko and Grafite.
Rustu came off his line early in the second half but mistimed his clearance to leave an empty net, only for Christian Gentner to fire high.
Dzeko shook off defender Matteo Ferrari in the 53rd but struck the outside of the post.
The match had to be interrupted briefly in the 60th minute because of the smoke from flares lit by Turkish fans. The smoke, drifting from the stands, stung Rustu’s eyes and the Besiktas goalkeeper was grateful for the brief brake.
Besiktas had a good chance when Bobo broke through but he shot wildly off the target.
The Istanbul side started seeking to score with more determination after Grafite’s ejection.
But Wolfsburg nearly took the lead when Zvjezdan Misimovic’s free kick from 20 meters (yards) narrowly missed the target.
