Watch Landon Donovan score his first goal since coming out of retirement

Published Nov. 15, 2016 2:39 p.m. ET

10 days ago, Landon Donovan was retired. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, he decided to come back to soccer and re-join the LA Galaxy. Now, two substitute appearances later, he is a goalscorer (again).

Until a week ago, Donovan hadn't played a professional match in 21 months. Now he's perfectly timing his late run to find open space and slotting a left-footed shot just inside the post to bring the Galaxy level in a crucial late season match. It's remarkable.

When Donovan originally retired in 2014, he was MLS's all-time leading goal scorer, having found the net 144 times. Now it's 145 and with four matches left then the playoffs, who knows how many more Donovan might score. And that's just this season. Maybe he'll come back again next season and keep adding some more. At this point, it feels like Donovan can do whatever he wants.
