Watch a referee assist this laser strike from the Seattle Sounders' Osvaldo Alonso

Published Nov. 15, 2016 2:37 p.m. ET

The Seattle Sounders entered Sunday’s match against the LA Galaxy desperate for points. They needed everyone on the pitch to contribute — and that’s exactly what happened.

When Nicolas Lodeiro tried to send a backward pass to Osvaldo Alonso, the ref stepped in the way and set up an even better ball for Alonso:

Alonso ran onto it and couldn’t have stuck it much better than that. Goalkeeper Brian Rowe couldn’t do much to stop the laser. But kudos to referee Armando Villarreal, who really should be credited with the assist.

The Sounders surely didn't mind the help — the goal was the cherry on top of two Jordan Morris strikes and an LA own-goal that gave Seattle the 4-2 win.

UPDATE: On Sunday night, hours after the Sounders game finished, the city's other professional soccer team, the Seattle Reign, also played a match in Houston. And, oddly enough, the same thing happened.

Check out this goal from Reign striker Kim Little, and note how the sequence was set up nicely by referee Farhad Dadkho.

Two Seattle goals, and two referee assists. Don't start counting on this though, Seattle teams.
