Copa del Rey: Villarreal, Bilbao & Espanyol join Barcelona in semifinals
BARCELONA, Spain — Villarreal won 1-0 at Getafe to advance to a Copa del Rey semifinal against Barcelona on a 2-0 aggregate score on Thursday.
Athletic Bilbao will meet Espanyol in the other semifinal.
Villarreal entered with a 1-0 lead from the opening leg and held Getafe in check until striker Gerard Moreno sealed its place among the final four teams with a goal in the 78th minute.
Barcelona knocked out Atletico Madrid on Wednesday. The Catalan club will host Villarreal at Camp Nou on Feb. 11.
”We have reached the semifinals for the first time in the history of Villarreal,” coach Marcelino Garcia said. ”We are now two games from the final and face a very difficult rival, who is maybe playing at its best. But nobody can take away our excitement.”
Joel Campbell debuted for Villarreal after his arrival from Arsenal on loan.
Bilbao eliminated Malaga thanks to Aritz Aduriz’s goal three minutes after halftime for a 1-0 victory after they drew without goals in the opening leg. Aduriz tapped in Markel Susaeta’s pass to cap a quick attack started from a goalkick.
Espanyol moved on despite a 1-0 loss at Sevilla, advancing 3-2 over both legs.
Espanyol left back Anaitz Arbilla curled a free kick off the crossbar for Espanyol’s best scoring chance just two minutes after kickoff.
The Barcelona-based side then withstood Sevilla’s constant push until substitute Diogo Figueras struck with a long-range shot two minutes from time.
