US, South African players meet Mandela

A day after facing off in a match in his honor, the United

States and South African soccer teams met with Nelson Mandela.

They greeted Mandela at his Johannesburg office and presented

him with shirts.

U.S. coach Bob Bradley gave the shirt to the former South

African president, who also received a vuvuzela with an American

flag attached that had been signed by the team.

On Wednesday, the Americans beat South Africa 1-0 in Cape Town

to win the Nelson Mandela Challenge.

American civil rights leader Rev. Jesse Jackson spoke to South

Africa’s players after Mandela and the U.S. team had left, saying

”last night’s game was a stepping stone to rising higher and

higher, to get better and better.”
