US goalie Howard inspires memes, Wiki change with heroics
Well, the US men’s World Cup run ended in heartbreak Tuesday, but not before inspiring a nation full of fans to jump on the bandwagon.
The 2-1 loss to Belgium sends the Americans home in the Round of 16, though there was one bright side: the stellar play of goalie Tim Howard.
Howard stopped 16 shots, the most by any goalie in a World Cup game in almost 50 years (since 1966). A mad dash by his teammates at the end made it look like the US team might pull off a miracle win, but it was too little, too late.
But the Internet sure took notice of Howard’s play throughout.
Just look at the memes that were trending on Twitter under the hashtag #thingstimhowardcouldsave.

As for the loss, Howard’s not about to throw his teammates under the bus. He spoke Wednesday morning on NBC’s Today show, saying "We gave everything we had, and to be honest, we’re proud of that."
