Twente created more chances but Roda had the better ones with a Mads Junker header coming back off the bar and Laurent Delorge forcing a fine save from Nikolay Mihaylov.
Twente, who lost title-winning boss Steve McClaren to Wolfsburg earlier this summer, replacing him with Michel Preud’homme, carved out the first opening in the 12th minute.
Theo Janssen set up Cheick Tiote to get a shot away, but Vincent Lachambre got an in important block to snuff out the danger.
Willem Janssen then fired wide for the hosts before Theo Janssen’s left-wing cross picked out Peter Wisgerhof unmarked at the back post, but he could not direct his header on target.
And Roda were indebted to goalkeeper Przemyslaw Tyton for keeping them on level terms a minute before the break when he superbly parried Dwight Tiendalli’s shot from the right side of the area, Pa-Modou Kah completing the clearance.
It was Twente who rode their luck in the 56th minute, though, as Delorge crossed from the right and Junker’s header smacked against the bar.
At the other end Bryan Ruiz, Twente’s top scorer last term, found space in the area to get a shot away only to be denied by another timely block from Lachambre.
Tyton then caught a Luuk de Jong header before his opposite number Mihaylov ensured his side would leave with a point with a brilliant save nine minutes from time.
Delorge’s shot from the left of the area was heading for the top corner before Mihaylov clawed it out and denied Roda a winner.
