The new Football Manager game includes Brexit scenarios

Published Nov. 15, 2016 2:34 p.m. ET

Football Manager is getting political. Kind of. More like politics has gotten into the way that soccer could be run and because Football Manager is the ultimate in making all the mechanics of running a team as realistic as possible, they had to take politics into account.

When Football Manager 17 comes out, it will include scenarios for Brexit. The decision by the people of the United Kingdom to withdraw from the European Union is factored into the game and players will have to navigate the changing laws because of it. That means trying to get work permits for players from Europe who have been covered by European Union laws, but will now have to get work permits that could block them from playing in the United Kingdom.

"I started working on the feature on the Saturday morning after the vote," Football Manager director Miles Jacobson told the BBC. "I was trying to work out how it would affect my business and the sport that I love.

"I sat on the sofa for two days reading as much as I could from the pro- and anti-Brexit camps."

There are a few different versions of Brexit in the game. There's a hard exit and soft exit for the UK, which affects how the work permits work. There's also a scenario where Scotland stays in the UK and their laws affect Scottish clubs, as well as a scenario where a Scottish referendum makes them an independent country that stays in the European Union.

Basically, the Football Manager creators have thought of everything and trying to account for every possibility, which is the most Football Manager thing possible. After all, that's why people love the game so much.
