Struggling Alkmaar sack Koeman

Dutch champions AZ Alkmaar have fired Ronald Koeman after a poor start to the new Eredivisie season and their exit from the Champions League.

AZ have decided to axe the former Holland international after Friday’s 2-1 home defeat to Vitesse Arnhem.

The result left AZ in sixth spot in the Eredivisie and they have failed to qualify for the knockout stages in Europe.

“The board and directors see no further basis for cooperating” with Koeman, read a club statement.

Koeman only too over at AZ last summer after Louis van Gaal left to join Bayern Munich and AZ will now begin their search for a new coach as they look to get their season back on track.
