Steven Gerrard reportedly set for Liverpool academy coaching job

The next chapter of Steven Gerrard's career looks like it'll be back at Liverpool – only this time, on the academy level.

Gerrard is set to take a coaching role at Liverpool's youth academy, several outlets have reported. The news is not yet official, but Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has hinted at Gerrard's return to Anfield, previously telling reporters, "When there is something to announce, we will – there will be one day."

Gerrard was offered the manager position at MK Dons, but he turned it down last month, calling the offer "a bit soon" into his post-playing career. According to reports, Gerrard is following Klopp's advice to ease into coaching with a role that is more low-key.

It appears that Liverpool's Under-23 coach, Michael Beale, is on the cusp of accepting a job in Brazil, according to several outlets. It could leave an opening for Gerrard, or cause a reshuffling in the academy, opening up another role, although that move is not yet confirmed either.

Gerrard retired from playing last month after his LA Galaxy were knocked out of the playoffs. He spent two seasons with LA, and before that he was a Liverpool legend, amassing 710 appearances, 186 goals and eight major trophies with the club.

A return to Liverpool always seemed to be in the cards for Gerrard after his stint in LA ended. Before the midfielder left the Galaxy, Klopp said Gerrard would always be welcome back at Anfield. Now it appears the manager is making good on his word.
