Socceroos to open WCup 3rd round in Brisbane

Football Federation Australia says the Socceroos will open the

third round of Asian qualifying for the 2014 World Cup in Brisbane

on Sept. 2 against Thailand.

It will be Australia’s first in Brisbane since the Socceroos

sealed their 2010 AFC Asian Cup finals berth in March 2010.

The draw for Asian qualifiers for Brazil 2014 was made in Rio de

Janeiro last weekend. Australia, which is entering qualifying in

the third round, is in Group D with Saudi Arabia, Oman and

Thailand. The top two teams in each group advance to the fourth

round.

Australia is attempting to reach the World Cup for a fourth

time, and third in succession. After losing to eventual champion

Italy in the second round at Germany 2006, Australia failed to

progress from the group stage at South Africa 2010.
