Roma beats Empoli 3-1 to move provisionally 3rd in Serie A

MILAN (AP) Stephan El Shaarawy scored twice, including a stunning opening goal, as Roma won 3-1 at Empoli to move provisionally to third in Serie A on Saturday.

Miralem Pjanic scored Roma's other goal after Empoli leveled with a somewhat comical own goal from Ervin Zukanovic.

Empoli defender Marco Rui was sent off following a second booking.

It was a sixth successive league win for Roma and moved the Giallorossi a point above Fiorentina, which hosts title-chasing Napoli on Monday.

AC Milan can also boost its chances of earning the final Champions League berth with a win at home to Torino later.

El Shaarawy has taken his tally to four for Roma as he continues his return to form in a boost to Italy ahead of the European Championship.
