Red Bulls clinch playoff berth in Major League Soccer

PORTLAND, Oregon (AP) The New York Red Bulls beat the Portland Timbers 2-0 in Major League Soccer on Sunday to become the first team to clinch a playoff spot.

New York moved into first place in the Eastern Conference with 48 points, one point ahead of Columbus. The Red Bulls have won three of four and 11 of 14.

Felipe and Damien Perrinelle scored three minutes apart late in the first half for the Red Bulls.

Portland remained in sixth place in the Western Conference, a point ahead of San Jose for the last playoff spot. The Timbers are winless in four games.

Elsewhere, Switzerland international Tranquillo Barnetta scored his first MLS goal to lead Philadelphia past Houston 2-0.

Philadelphia pulled with three points of sixth-place Montreal for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
