Real Sociedad returned to winning ways in emphatic style with a thumping 4-0 home victory over Rayo Vallecano that could prove vital to their hopes of staying up.
A run of four defeats in five games had seen Sociedad slip ever closer to the relegation zone but they earned a priceless three points against mid-table Rayo thanks to goals from Imanol Agirretxe, David Zurutuza, Antoine Griezmann and Carlos Vela.
The victory lifts Sociedad eight points clear of the bottom three and one point behind Rayo.
Sociedad would have been desperate for a good start tonight after losing their last home match 3-1 to Levante and then going down 5-1 at Real Madrid last weekend, and they got just that.
Vela saw an early effort saved by Joel Robles before Sociedad took a sixth-minute lead when Agirretxe slotted in Daniel Estrada’s cross from the right.
Agirretxe had a chance to double his side’s tally in the 22nd minute only to see his header saved by Joel, but the home side only had to wait eight more minutes to make their next breakthrough.
Agirretxe was again involved as his headed pass into the six-yard box was nodded home by Zurutuza.
Sociedad then made sure of the points with two goals in three minutes at the start of the second half through Griezmann and Vela.
French winger Griezmann made it 3-0 in the 51st minute when he neatly dinked in Gorka Elustondo’s through-ball, and the home fans had barely finished celebrating before Vela added a fourth with a thumping finish, wrapping up a convincing and much-needed triumph.
