Plzen rejects request to let coach guide Slovakia

Slovakia remains without a coach after Viktoria Plzen rejected a

proposal from the Slovak football federation to release Pavel Vrba

and allow him to take over the national team.

Plzen announced Monday it had turned down the federation.

Vladimir Weiss was fired as Slovakia coach in January following

the team’s failure to qualify for the 2012 European

Championship.

Vrba led Plzen to its first Czech league title and a spot in the

Europa League for finishing third in the group stage of the

Champions League, behind Barcelona and AC Milan. Plzen was

eliminated by German club Schalke.

Vrba’s contract with Plzen expires in 2013. He says he respects

the club’s decision.
