Olympiakos beats host Xanthi 1-0 in Greek league

Leonardo scored the winning goal Saturday to lead Olympiakos to a 1-0 win over host Xanthi in the Greek league.

The victory helped the defending champion extend its lead over rival Panathinaikos to four points ahead of its rival’s game against Atromitos on Sunday.

Olympiakos charged forward from the start, but it was Xanthi which missed a scoring chance in the 10th minute when a shot by Odai Saify from the edge of the area went just wide.

Olympiakos missed its first scoring chance in the 18th when a low drive by Oscar forced Michael Gspurning to make a diving save.

Olympiakos took the lead in the 31st when Leonardo converted a cross from Costas Mitroglou for his first goal of the season.

Three minutes later, Olympiakos nearly scored again when a shot by Luciano Galletti from inside the area sailed over Gspurning’s crossbar.

The second half saw the hosts trying to level, and they had their best chance in the 84th when Marcelo Pereira’s shot went high with only goalkeeper Antonis Nikopolidis to beat.

Also Saturday it was: Levadiakos 0, Aris 2 and PAOK 1, Larissa 0.

On Sunday it’s: Panthrakikos vs. Asteras; Giannena vs. Iraklis; Ergotelis vs. Kavala and Panionios vs. AEK.
