Netherlands win but fall flat again at World Cup

Despite a 2-0 opening victory over Denmark, there is plenty of

evidence that the Netherlands’ bid for a first World Cup title may

again be unsuccessful.

The Dutch team made an uninspiring start Monday in the opening

Group E match, needing an own goal and a late tap-in to beat the

injury-hit Danes.

The Netherlands had scored 10 goals in two warmup games heading

into the tournament but showed little of that fire power at Soccer

City.

Twice a World Cup runner-up in the 1970s, the Dutch team has

long failed to match their potential, and coach Bert van Marwijk

acknowledged his team kept losing the ball Monday because it was

tense.
