Dutch football authorities are calling for a criminal investigation into racist comments after Netherlands midfielder Leroy Fer posted a photo of himself and eight teammates online.

Fer posted the picture, which appears to have been taken by striker Memphis Depay, on Twitter. Both Fer and Depay are black, as are several of their teammates.

The website Voetbalzone.nl put the photo on its Facebook page, where it drew a stream of racist comments over the weekend.

Fer, who plays for Queens Park Rangers, told Dutch daily De Telegraaf that he was shocked by the reactions.

Fer said: ”As a footballer you get monkey sounds from the stands in the former East Bloc. But what has happened now is far worse. It feels like those people are saying: ‘You don’t belong in the Dutch team.”’
