Minister: Qatar to allow ‘workers’ committees’

A Qatar minister says the Gulf nation’s cabinet has approved the

formation of ”workers’ committees” ahead of the 2022 football

World Cup.

Labor Minister Nasser bin Abdullah Hamidi says the draft law

must still be approved by the country’s ruler Sheik Hamad bin

Khalifa Al Thani.

He spoke to The Associated Press after meeting Monday with

international labor activists in Geneva.

The International Trade Union Confederation’s general secretary,

Sharran Burrow, says the committees fall short of full union

rights.

ITUC says about one million foreign workers in Qatar are

exploited and have few rights.

Hundreds of thousands more workers are expected to be brought in

to build the venues for the tournament in ten years’ time.
