Mexico coach to skip Copa America

Mexico coach Jose Manuel de la Torre says he will skip the Copa

America and send an assistant instead to handle El Tri in next

year’s South American championship.

De la Torre said on Friday in the sports newspaper Record that

he will be focusing on the CONCACAF Gold Cup, the championship of

North and Central America and the Caribbean. The Gold Cup final is

on June 25 at the Rose Bowl, and the Copa America starts July 1 in

Argentina.

Mexico won the Gold Cup in 2009.

Mexico and Japan play as guest teams in the Copa America,

joining 10 South American teams. Under CONCACAF rules, Mexico will

send an under-23 team to the Copa America, where it is in Group C

with Uruguay, Chile and Peru.
