Mexico coach to skip Copa America

Mexico coach Jose Manuel de la Torre says he will skip the Copa

America, sending an assistant instead to handle El Tri in next

year’s South American championship.

De la Torre said on Friday in the sports newspaper Record that

he will be focusing his energy on the Gold Cup, the championship

for CONCACAF – the governing body of football in North and Central

America and the Caribbean. The Gold Cup final is on June 25 in

California with the Copa America beginning on July 1 in

Argentina.

Mexico won the Gold Cup in 2009.

Mexico and Japan play as guest teams in the Copa America,

joining 10 South American sides. Under CONCACAF rules, Mexico will

send only an under-23 team to the Copa America. Mexico plays in

Group C with Uruguay, Chile and Peru.
