Marseille fail to reclaim Ligue 1’s top spot with latest setback at Nice
Marseille failed to win away from home for the eighth consecutive game as it lost 2-1 against Nice on Friday to stay in second place behind league leader Lyon.
A win would have moved Marseille provisionally two points clear of Lyon ahead of this weekend’s games, but it remains one point behind after another sloppy away performance.
Marseille’s last away win in all competitions was a 2-1 victory at Caen on Oct. 4.
Another defeat looked certain after Romain Genevois put Nice ahead in the 47th minute and fellow defender Niklas Hult made it 2-0 in the 73rd, despite Nice having defender Kevin Gomis sent off in the 53rd for two fouls on Marseille winger Dimitri Payet.
”I think we did enough to win the game, we should have scored more,” Marseille coach Marcelo Bielsa said. ”But certain things keep happening over and over again. We had 10 chances to score and our opponents scored with their second chance following a free kick. We should be able to stop this from happening.”
Third-place Paris Saint-Germain can move level on points with Marseille if it beats fourth-place Saint-Etienne on Sunday.
Although Marseille’s home form is exceptionally good – with 10 straight home wins after losing the opening home game of the season to Montpellier – it continues to struggle badly away from Stade Velodrome.
Marseille winger Florian Thauvin gave Marseille hope when he pulled a goal back in the 77th, but it was not enough for Bielsa’s wasteful side.
Nice, which is still waiting for clearance from the French league authorities to pick winger Hatem Ben Arfa after he joined from Newcastle this month, has won three straight games to climb up to ninth place.
Meanwhile, Lyon hosts struggling Metz on Sunday afternoon and third-place Paris Saint-Germain visits fourth-place Saint-Etienne that night.
Marseille and Lyon are out of the domestic Cups and are not involved in Europe, meaning they will have far less games left to play than PSG – which is through to the Champions League quarterfinals and still involved in both Cup competitions.
