If Napoli were supposed to be starstruck by the lights of the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday, nobody told Lorenzo Insigne. The 25-year-old Italian added a goal to his highlight reel in the early going of Napoli’s Champions League tie against Real Madrid.
Insigne latched onto a threaded through ball from Marek Hamsik and took aim from roughly 35 yards out. The diminutive winger made no mistake.

The one-timed effort seemingly caught everyone by surprise, especially Real Madrid goalkeeper Keylor Navas. With Navas off of his line, Insigne spun a low, curling effort into the Real Madrid net in the 8th minute.
Just like that, Napoli were up with a precious away goal in the first leg of their round of 16 tie against the defending champions. Real Madrid had a handful of early opportunities kept out but found their equalizer in the 18th minute via Karim Benzema.
To say the early going of the match was frenetic would be a massive understatement. Of course, given the proficiency of these two offenses, the goals were going to be coming. We just didn’t know we’d be getting goals like Insigne’s pearler.
