Jorge Luis Pinto out as Costa Rica’s coach after surprising World Cup run

Pinto helped lead Los Ticos to the World Cup quarterfinals this summer in Brazil.

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica —

Jorge Luis Pinto, the Colombian coach who led tiny Costa Rica to the World Cup quarterfinals, is leaving after failing to agree to a new contract.

The Costa Rican federation announced Pinto’s departure Thursday.

Costa Rica emerged from a group with Italy, England and Uruguay, all former world champions. It was eliminated in the quarterfinals by the Netherlands, losing 4-3 on penalty kicks after the match was 0-0 after extra time.
