James looking forward to management

The experienced 39-year-old England international is out of

contract in the summer and has waived the right to an automatic

extension on his current deal because of the club’s perilous

financial situation. He expects to be sitting in the dugout once he

decides to finally retire, and admits he has some interesting ideas

he wants to bring to the table. He said: “From what I have

experienced as a player, I believe the managerial job could be done

very differently, and I would like to have that opportunity. “I

think there are ways and means of getting the best out of players

which can be done at any level, and I would like the opportunity to

see if my theory works.” Portsmouth take on Tottenham in the FA Cup

on Sunday, as Spurs boss Harry Redknapp faces his former club at

Wembley. James is looking forward to the game, and thinks Redknapp

is one of the best managers he has ever worked with. “Harry is

arguably the best man-manager I have ever worked under,” he added.

“You can go through Spurs’ side for an analysis of how strong they

are in all departments. “But if it was simply a case of analysing a

side before the match and deciding who was going to be the winner,

then we probably would not need to turn up. “As much as you know

how good these players are and know how much they can and can’t do,

they are very difficult to stop. “It is going to be a tough game,

but the reality in football is that anything can happen.”
