Heskey delighted to be back

The burly frontman made his return to action against the Baggies on

Saturday and grabbed what proved to be the winner in a 2-1 victory.

Heskey is delighted to have picked up where he left off before

suffering a knee problem, with his form during the early stages of

Gerard Houllier’s reign suggesting he was back to his best. He

feels he is capable of reaching those levels again and is confident

that the weekend derby success against West Brom will inspire the

whole side to greater things, following a recent slump. “I was

pleased with how I started the season but it was so frustrating to

get injured,” said Heskey. “It was great to get a goal straight

away on my comeback, we needed the points and that’s the main

thing. “I just want to stay injury-free and keep putting in good

performances for the lads so we can concentrate on moving up the

table. “That’s our focus. We want the West Brom game to be a

springboard to push on. It’s got to start somewhere and we want the

West Brom result to be it.” Victory over the Baggies broke a

three-game losing run for Villa and helped to put four points

between them and the drop zone. With the Premier League still so

tight, Heskey believes Houllier’s men should now be setting their

sights much higher, especially as their lengthy injury list is set

to be cut over the coming weeks. “The table is so tight, so results

are the main thing and having all these players back gives us a

high as a team,” he said. “When players have been out for a month

or longer it’s like new signings.”
