Henderson eyes senior call-up

The Liverpool midfielder made his full international debut a year

ago in a friendly against France back in November, however has not

started since in Fabio Capello’s senior side. The England Under-21s

skipper has also had to watch on as fellow national team-mates

including Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Jack Rodwell and Daniel

Sturridge have successfully made the step up. However, Henderson is

happy to continue to be an integral figure for Stuart Pearce’s men

for now and insists he will be ready to take his chance when called

upon. “I’m over the moon for the lads that have gone up,” said the

21-year-old. “A few of them are regulars now and deserve it. I wish

them all the best. “As for me, I believe in myself. “One day I know

I will be given the opportunity and I need to take it. “I would

never think that first cap came too soon. Maybe I didn’t perform on

the night as well as I would have liked, but I’ve analysed the

performance and moved on. “You never forget your first cap. It was

a brilliant experience and taught me a lot.” Henderson, who starred

for the Under-21s in their 5-0 thumping over Iceland on Thursday,

also admits he needs to focus on carving out a regular spot in

Kenny Dalglish’s first-team for Liverpool before thinking about

adding to his international cap. “The year has gone pretty quickly,

probably because so much has happened,” said the Reds’ £20

million capture from Sunderland. “I need to concentrate on doing

what I’m doing, but I’d love to play for the seniors again soon.

“First I need to get a regular place at Liverpool and start playing

well. When I come away with the Under-21s, I need to show that I am

100 per cent at it all the time, and lead by example. “Then

hopefully, I will receive that call-up. “It’s a really big

challenge at Anfield but one I’m relishing. We have a lot of great

midfielders, but we all help each other and learn from each other.

I’m very happy with the way things have gone so far. “It has been

tough, but I have stuck at it. And I am still learning every game.”
