Heavy rains cause 1 death, landslides in Rio

Heavy rains have caused floods, blackouts, landslides and at

least one death in Rio de Janeiro.

The city’s emergency operations center reports on its website

that the storm Monday night flooded several downtown streets and

the Maracana stadium, site of the final game of the 2014 World Cup

and major ceremonies of the 2016 Olympic games.

The website report says that several poor hillside communities

suffered minor landslides, with no deaths.

An official from the fire department said a body was found in a

flooded area downtown. The official could not be quoted by name

under departmental policy.

The electrical utility company said a tree fell, leaving the

city’s west side without power.
