Hahnemann joins US teammate Howard at Everton

Marcus Hahnemann became Everton’s second American goalkeeper on

Friday after signing a short-term deal to provide extra cover for

Tim Howard.

The 39-year-old Hahnemann has been without a club since being

released by Wolverhampton Wanderers at the end of last season.

Everton signed him until January to provide another goalkeeping

option alongside regular starter Howard and backup Jan Mucha, a

Slovakia international.

”It is difficult when you only have two senior goalkeepers – it

only needs one of them to go down and then you are in trouble,”

Everton manager David Moyes said. ”Marcus is friends with Tim. It

is after the transfer window has closed and we had to look for

someone who we knew … it gives me someone who can help in the

reserves.

”And if we get an injury to a goalkeeper, he has got good

experience of the Premier League and we can use him as

backup.”

Hahnemann, who has also played in England for Reading and

Fulham, has played nine times for the United States but is a backup

to the 32-year-old Howard with the national team.
