Guatemala eliminates St. Lucia

Gonzalo Romero scored two goals to lead Guatemala to a 3-1 win over St. Lucia in the second leg of their CONCACAF World Cup qualifier Saturday to book a place in the third round.

Guatemala wons the two-legged tie 9-1 on aggregate to move into the final 12 of regional qualifying, beginning August.

Guatemala’s third-round group will include the winners of outstanding second-round matches: U.S.-Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago-Bermuda and Cuba-Antigua and Barbuda.

A 6-0 win in the first leg meant Guatemala entered Saturday’s match under little pressure, and Romero gave his team a 1-0 lead on the night in the 24th minute.

Guatemala expanded its lead to 2-0 on Romero’s second goal. A pass from the left flank deflected off a defender to Romero, who scored from 12 yards.

St. Lucia, forced to play its home leg in Los Angeles’ Memorial Coliseum due to the lack of a suitable venue in its country, got a goal in the 45th minute as Kenwen McPhee scored on a 20-yard shot.

Guatemala’s Abner Trigueros completed the scoring in the 86th minute.
