Former adviser to Cabanas held in custody

A former financial adviser to Salvador Cabanas is being held in

custody as investigators look into charges he defrauded the

Paraguay footballer out of more than $1 million.

A Paraguay judge ordered Jose Maria Gonzalez held in preventive

detention and set a court hearing for Dec. 21.

Cabanas was a star with Mexico club America but was shot in the

head at point-blank range in a Mexico City bar 11 months ago. He

miraculously survived the attack but is not expected to play again.

His wife alleges Gonzalez committed fraud, siphoning off some of

Cabanas’ assets.
