England exile frustrates Richards

Richards, who has started 10 of 19 games for his club this season

but has not played a minute under Capello, has not represented his

country at senior level since November 2007. That does not look set

to change in Wednesday’s friendly against France – the Italian

names his squad tonight – as Richards has been included in the

Under-21 group for Tuesday’s clash with Germany. Quoted in several

newspapers, the 22-year-old said: “Do you know what is most

frustrating? “When Capello was asked by the media why I wasn’t

playing, he said it was because I wasn’t playing regularly for

Manchester City. “Last season, I played 29 games, but then I would

see players who weren’t playing for their clubs, like Wes Brown and

Luke Young, getting into the squad. “I just thought, ‘I’d rather

him be honest and, if he doesn’t think I’m good enough, just tell

me what I need to do to get in’. “People look at me and think ‘he’s

young and flashy’, but on the training field I work hard and every

manager will tell you the same.” He continued: “I want to be in the

England team. I’m not one of those players who thinks getting money

and playing for Manchester City is good enough. “I want better than

that. I know the ability I have and I know I can do better. I want

to show people what I can do. “I’ve not had any contact [with

Capello]. I am scratching my head, thinking ‘what do I need to do?’

“I am not saying Capello is this or Capello is that. It’s nothing

to do with that. I just want to know what I have to do to get in
