Egypt’s Hassan set to become most capped player

Egypt midfielder Ahmed Hassan is set to become the most capped

player of all time when he takes the pitch in a friendly on

Wednesday against Niger in Qatar.

The 36-year-old Hassan will make his 179th appearance, meaning

he will break the record he has shared for several months with

Saudi Arabia goalkeeper Mohamed al-Deayea. The Saudi goalkeeper

last played in 2006.

Hassan, who has won four Africa Cup of Nations titles and been

named the tournament’s best player twice, made his international

debut in 1995.

He was set to break the record on Monday in a friendly against

Kenya, but the Kenyans used its under-23 squad for the hastily

arranged match and the 5-0 win for Egypt didn’t count as an

official game. Hassan converted a penalty in the win.
