Egypt advances with 2nd-half surge
Egypt clinched a spot in the quarterfinals of the Olympic men’s soccer tournament Wednesday after scoring three goals in the second half to beat Belarus 3-1 in its last group game.
After a scoreless first half, Mohamed Salah scored his third goal of the tournament to give Egypt the lead in the 56th minute.
With Belarus pressing for an equalizer, Egypt capitalized on well-timed counterattacks to add two more goals through Marwan Mohsen and Mohamed Aboutrika.
Andrei Voronkov pulled one back for Belarus with a header in the 87th.
Belarus only needed a draw to advance and played defensively from the start. Egypt struggled to break through in the first half.
