Dwight Lodeweges quits as coach of Dutch club Heerenveen
HEERENVEEN, Netherlands (AP) Dwight Lodeweges has quit as coach of struggling Dutch club SC Heerenveen, leaving with the team 15th in the 18-team top flight.
In a video message posted on Heerenveen’s website Wednesday, Lodeweges said he quit ”in the interests of the club” so that a new leader can get the team back on track.
The team from the northern Netherlands narrowly missed out on a place in the Europa League last season but has struggled this term, winning only one of its nine league matches. The only team it has beaten is last-placed De Graafschap Doetinchem in the first match of the season.
Heerenveen appointed Foppe de Haan as interim coach. De Haan worked at Heerenveen from 1985-2004, including two long stints as coach.
