Christian Pulisic talks USA vs. Mexico, his favorite all-time player and more

As the United States prepares for another edition of their bitter rivalry with Mexico on Friday (7 p.m. ET on FS1), all eyes are on young USMNT starlet Christian Pulisic. He might be just 18 years old, but he's well aware of the significance of the World Cup qualifier.

“This is as big as it gets for a soccer player, for a soccer team.” Pulisic said on “The Herd” on Wednesday. “We're super excited for this game.”

It remains to be seen if he features in the match, but it's hard to envision a scenario where he doesn't factor in. The Hershey, Pa. native has made an impression for both club and country despite having just turned 18 years old. With all those expectations comes pressure, however, including relating to his older teammates.

“I think what's more strange is when you're off the pitch with your teammates and you can't really relate to some of their conversations about their kids and stuff like that,” he said with a laugh. “On the field, I think it's even easier because it's just a game.”

Pulisic also revealed who his all-time favorite player is, and the answer comes as a bit of a surprise: Luis Figo. It's not a surprise because Figo isn't deserving, but Portuguese and Real Madrid legend retired in 2009 … when Pulisic was just 11 years old. Nevertheless, Pulisic grew up watching Figo and envisioned playing a similar style to the Portuguese.

“I'm not sure how that came about, I just always loved watching him.”

In fact, Pulisic's dad still calls his son “Figo” to this day. Who would have guessed? The U.S. star also discussed his time with Dortmund, the global viability of MLS, whether he'd be comfortable as the face of American soccer and more. You can listen to his full interview on “The Herd” in the video above.
