Augsburg seals second win of the season

Augsburg scored twice in the second half to pick up their second victory of the season as Wolfsburg’s Bundesliga struggles continued.

Daniel Brinkmann hit first for the promoted side in the 65th minute and Edmond Kapllani ended all doubts with his goal four minutes into stoppage time.

Augsburg snapped a three-game losing streak but remained in last place, five points behind their opponents who have collected just one point in their last seven away matches.

Neither team could produce any real chances in the first 25 minutes until Augsburg had a golden opportunity after a miscommunication in the Wolfsburg defence.

With goalkeeper Diego Benaglio calling for the ball, defender Alexander Madlung’s header went to Tobias Werner, who stood in front of an open goal but shot over the bar in the 26th minute.

Benaglio made a fine save in the 41st minute from Daniel Baier’s shot and was helped by the right post on a counter attack three minutes later by Sascha Molders.

Wolfsburg missed a superb chance in the 51st minute with Marcel Schafer’s shot going just inches wide of the far right post on a counter attack.

The visitors again failed to score in the 64th minute as Madlung stood alone at the far post but could not convert from two yards out.

And Augsburg made Wolfsburg pay for their carelessness and grabbed the lead a minute later.

Molders played a superb ball over his head into the path of Brinkmann, who beat Benaglio to the far left corner.

Wolfsburg had a chance to equalise after 79 minutes but Srdjan Lakic hit Schafer’s cross wide from seven yards.

Augsburg finished off the victory with a second goal four minutes into stoppage time with Kapllani hitting home Andrew Sinkala’s cross at the far post.
