Bruce keeps check on Barrow boys

The Blue Square Premier side head for the Stadium of Light in the

FA Cup third round on Saturday backed by a travelling support of

7,200 and determined to pull off a major shock. However, Bruce, a

winner as a player in his Manchester United days, believes the

Black Cats can launch a lengthy run in the competition this

weekend. He said: “If you are a player or a manager, we have all

been involved in a horrible one where an upset can happen, and

that’s what we must guard against. “We have seen it. We have seen

it with the biggest clubs – Manchester United losing to Bournemouth

after being holders of the FA Cup – we have all seen it over the

years. “That’s the magic of it. It’s a horrible time of year to

play these games because of the weather, the pitches. “Thankfully,

we have got a home draw. We couldn’t have asked for anything better

than a home draw and as I have said since I walked through the door

here, our best chance of doing anything is in a cup competition.

“We know we are capable of winning five or six games, and that’s

what you have to do to win a cup. “We are capable and if you keep

getting the draws you hope you can and stay at home, you have got a

chance.” However, Bruce, who already has defender Michael Turner

suspended, will once again have to contend with a lengthy injury

list which seems likely to rob him on nine players.
