Novara back in Serie A for 1st time in 55 years

Novara beat 10-man Padova 2-0 in a playoff Sunday and returned

to Serie A for the first time in 55 years.

Pablo Andres Gonzalez scored from a free kick to put Novara

ahead in the 16th minute and Marco Rigoni doubled the lead in the

70th.

Padova defender Cesare was sent off with a direct red card in

the 14th for a last-man foul.

The opening leg Thursday in the playoff for the third and final

Serie A promotion finished 0-0.

Atalanta and Siena were already promoted after finishing first

and second in Serie B.

Novara finished third in the second division and Padova placed

fifth.

Last season, Novara was in Serie C.

Novara is located between Milan and Turin.
